The photographs shown immediately below originally belonged to 3/5769 Private David
Anderson Hay, 3rd Battalion, Gordon Highlanders. Very little is known about Private
Hay's time in the army other than that at some stage during the First World War he
was captured and was sent to Alten Grabow Prisoner of War Camp in Germany. Prisoners
held at Alten Grabow included those from the British, French and Russian armies.
Private Hay is known to have been held at Alten Grabow at the same time as Maurice
Chevalier, a Frenchman who learnt English in the camp, and who subsequently became
famous as a singer.
During his time at Alten Grabow, Private Hay worked in some capacity
on the camp's electric trains. The exact nature of that work is uncertain but the
trains were, apparently, very dangerous. At the end of the First World War, Private
Hay was released and made his way back to Scotland, mostly on foot.
In July 2007,
a second photograph album belonging to Private Hay was discovered. This album contains
photographs of his time in the army area, as well as further photographs taken during
his time as a Prisoner of War in Alten Grabow. All of these photographs have now
been included below.
All of the photographs shown on this page are already with their
rightful family. However, copies can be made available to proven descendants of others
shown in the photographs.

Postcard -backed photograph. This postcard is not postally used but bears a faint
pencil inscription on the reverse from Pte Hay to his mother. The inscription reads
“Dear Mother, arrived in [illegible] this morning probably be home about Monday I
don’t know where I am going now but I think but I think I am on my way to England.
Davie”. It therefore appears that the postcard was written by Pte Hay after his
release from Alten Grabow in 1918 or 1919. dah0029
