Photographs From An Album Of Oriental Journeys

This album contains photographs taken on cruises to or from China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Ceylon, India, Suez Canal, Italy, France the UK in 1933 and 1934. One young man features in several of the photographs but, despite the fact that the album and photographs contain notes of the subject, date and location, he is described only as "Self". Possible clues to the identity of the young man may lay in the fact that he was photographed at Swanbourne House School which, we believe, to be the school of the same name which exists today in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire. Some photographs were taken in Froyle, Hampshire; Hampstead Heath, London; and at 16 Worsley Road.

Other photographs were taken on board the cruise liner Conte Rosso in 1933. At the time, this ship was owned by Lloyd Triestino line. During the second world war, the Conte Rosso was used as a troop ship by the Italian Government until May 1941 when it was torpedoed and sunk by HMS Upholder.

The album also features photographs taken on a journey to Hong Kong on the Conte Rosso's sister ship, the Conte Verde. The Conte Verde was one of the ships used by Jews emigrating to Shanghai after Kristallnacht. Further information on this is available in Ralph Harpuder's article "The Ships That Brought Us To Shanghai". In 1940, the Conte Verde was laid up in Shanghai until 1942 when it was chartered to the Japanese Government. In 1943 she was scuttled by her Italian crew, but was subsequently salvaged and re-named the Kotobuki Maru before being finally sunk near Kyoto in a US air attack in 1944 (Source: The Ships List).
