Cabinet Portrait by Upton and Court, 178 Great College Street, Camden Town, London.  Inscribed "Alfred Francis John Sparks, 8 February 1890 - 17 July 1963" on reverse.  Alfred married Violet Marian Vaughan Weekes on 12 October 1912 in Southampton.  Although he was listed as a Steward, he was known to have performed on stage, including aboard ships, and was also known as Jack. Sparks.  p0110

 

We are grateful to Alfred Sparks' niece for providing us with additional information about Alfred's marriage and occupation.  This photograph, together with p0150, below, was passed to her in February 2006.

We are pleased to have been able to pass this photograph to a descendant of Sir Gerald Strickland, later Baron Strickland of Sizergh.  We understand that Sir Gerald Strickland bought Sizergh Castle from his cousin, Walter Charles Strickland, in 1896 and that Walter Charles Strickland’s direct line has now died out.  We are grateful to the recipient of the photograph for kindly providing this information.
