Photographs Of The Hales Family

Please click a postcard to open enlarged image in new window

We are pleased to have been able to return this album to the grandson of Albert Hayles in May 2004 and are grateful to him for providing information on the the subjects of this album.

We would also like to record our gratitude to the son of Rowland and Elsie Cox, and to their great niece for providing additional information about the complex Cox - Hales - Clinch - Goodhew relationships.

Our thanks also go to the second cousin once removed of Stephen Laurence Gunyon for the information provided about Nell Gunyon (neé Helen Clinch).

Auntie Minnie: Cabinet Portrait by F M Rammell of 34 High Street, Sittingbourne, Kent.  Possibly married to "Uncle Albert".  Aunt Minnie was the great aunt to the family member to whom this album was passed in 2004.  Apparently,  two Hales brothers married two Clinch sisters.  hls0001

Clinch, Lillian: Cabinet Portait by F M Rammell, 34, High Street, Sittingbourne, Kent.  Wording on the album page indicates that Lillian died aged 20.  hls0003

Clinch, Lillian: Cabinet Portrait by De'Ath, Maidstone, Kent.  Lillian was born in Bicknor, Kent in 1885 and was the daughter of James Clinch and Matilda (nee Goodhew).  hls0004

Clinch, Winifred Mary: Cabinet Portrait by F M Rammell, 34, High Street, Sittingbourne, Kent.  Winifred was born in Bicknor Kent in 1882 and was the daughter of James Clinch and Matilda (neé Goodhew).  hls0005

Cobb, Revd, of Stockbury: Carte de Visite by Lombardi and Co, Pall Mall East, London, SW.  Inscribed "Revd Cobb of Stockbury" on the reverse. The album also contains two views of a church which, unfortunately, are not of sufficiently good quality to reproduce here. It seems most likely that the church features prominently in the lives of the Hales family, perhaps with weddings having taken place there.  hls0029

Cornwell, Edna, Peter and Jack: Postcard.  Edna, Peter and Jack were cousins to the mother of the family member to whom this album was passed in May 2004.  Apparently, Peter Cornwell married the last Matron of Maidstone Opthalmic Hospital.  hls0010

Cornwell, Jack: Postcard.  Inscribed "Jack Cornwell" on the reverse. Since photographic postcards post-date Cabinet Portraits, this effectively confirms that baby Jack is not John Cornwell whose Cabinet Portrait appears below (hls0023)hls0022

Cornwell, Jack: Postcard of a group of schoolchildren which includes Jack Cornwell.  hls0037

Cornwell, John: Cabinet Portrait by F M Rammell, 34 High Street, Sittingbourne, Kent.  Married Henrietta Hales.  hls0023

Cornwell, John and Mr Wilson: Postcard showing John Cornwell (right) and Mr Wilson in police uniform.  Each is shown with a medal, possibly from the First World War, thus suggesting that this photograph may have been taken in the 1920s.  hls0024

Cornwell, Margaret: Photographic postcard by W. Wright and Sons, Forest Gate, London, E.  Although the identity of the subject is shown only as "Margaret", the family member now in possession of the album believes that Margaret was a Cornwell.  hls0027

Cox, Elsie: Photograph.  Elsie Cox was Rowland Cox's wife.  Their son kindly provided us with information about Hales - Cox - Clinch family relationships, as did his neice.  hls0009

Cox, Rowland: Cabinet Portrait.  Rowland, and his brother Stanley Cox, were brothers and were the sons of Joseph Cox of Gloucester and Keturah Ann (Annie) Hales.  Keturah was the eldest of thirteen children born to Tylden Hales and Ann Norrington.  Following the death of Tylden, Keturah helped her mother to raise the younger siblings (including Albert and Thomas Hales whose photographs are shown below).  She also helped to run the Post Office and General Store in South Green.  hls0007

Cox, Stanley: Cabinet Portrait by A H De’Ath, 46 Week Street, Maidstone, Kent. It is unclear as to how, exactly, Stanley is connected to the Hales family but the relationship must have been close.  hls0006

Cox Stanley: Photograph.  hls0008

Edna: Cabinet Portrait.  hls0011

Goodhew, Emmie: Cabinet Photograph by Price and Company of Ramsgate.  In the absence of any other Goodhew photographs, it seems reasonable to conclude that Emmie was a friend of the Hales family, rather than a member.  The Goodhews were apparently related to the Cornwells, though it is not clear how.  hls0012

Gunyon, Nell: Cabinet Portrait printed by Marion Imp, Paris.

Nell Gunyon was originally thought to be a friend of a member of the Hales family.  In November 2006, however, the second cousin once removed of Stephen Laurence Gunyon informed us that his own research leads him to believe that Nell Gunyon was born Helen Clinch, sister to Lilian and Winifred Mary Clinch. Helen Clinch married Stephen Laurence Gunyon in Bicknor, Kent in 1884.

We are grateful for this additional information, and are pleased to have been able to put our contact in touch with the great nephew of Henrietta Hales, to whom the album containing photographs of the Hales-Clinch-Cox-Goodhew families was passed in May 2004, and with other members of the Hales and Clinch families who have also contacted Reminiscene since the photographs were placed on this site.  hls0028

Hales, Albert: Cabinet Portrait of "Uncle Albert" by the London Portrait Company, 105 Week Street, Maidstone, Kent.  Albert married Marianne Clinch.  This photograph album was passed to Albert's grandson in May 2004.  hls0033

Hales, Alfred: Cabinet Portrait by London Portrait Co, 3 City Road, Chester.  hls0019

Hales, Aunts Caroline and Angela: Cabinet Portrait by "E B Nock, 148 Ontario Street".  Although the subjects of the photograph were identified as "Aunt Caroline and?", the recipient of this album, the great nephew of the two ladies, has identified them as Caroline and Angela Hales.  hls0002

Hales, Charles: Cabinet Portrait by F M Rammell, 34 High Street, Sittingbourne, Kent.  hls0015

Hales, Ethel Mary: Postcard.  hls0021

Hales, Henrietta: Cabinet Portrait by F M Rammell, 34 High Street, Sittingbourne, Kent.  Henrietta was born in Stockbury, Kent on 24 March 1878.  She married John Cornwell (1879-1935) on 8 November 1905 at Stockbury.  John was the son of Peter Cornwell (1849-1909) who married twice - to sisters Caroline, and Ann Elizabeth Goodhew.  Apparently, another Goodhew sister, Jane, married Edmund Hales, brother of Keturah Ann Hales.  Henrietta spent most of her life in Westcliff On Sea, Essex, and was buried in  Bicknor, Kent in 1975.  Henrietta's great nephew, who is now in possession of this album, believes it was probably originally owned by her.  hls0017

Hales, Henrietta: Cabinet Portrait by F M Rammell, 34 High Street, Sittingbourne, Kent.  hls0018

Hales, Ivy: Cabinet Portrait by F M Rammell, 34 High Street, Sittingbourne, Kent.  hls0016

Hales, Shirley: Cabinet Portrait by Lewis and Company, Week Street, Maidstone, Kent.  The photograph occupies the first page of the album.  hls0030

Hales, Shirley: Cabinet Portrait.  The photographer's details have all but worn away but the first word in the name appears to be "Hickey".  hls0032

Hales, Shirley: Cabinet Portrait by the London Portrait Company, 105 Week Street, Maidstone, Kent.  hls0031

Hales, Thomas: Cabinet Portrait by A H De'Ath, 46 Week Street, Maidstone, Kent.  The words "Uncle Tom" appear on the album page.  hls0020

Hales, Win: Cabinet Portrait by Guy Allen, Ryde. Probably 1920s.  hls0014

Hales, Winifred and Mari[o]an Norah: Postcard.  The girls were sisters and were the daughters of Albert Hayles and Marianne Clinch.  Winifred was born in 1906 and Marian Norah in 1910.  hls0013

Kemsley, Harry: Cabinet Portrait by F M Ramell, 34 High Street, Sittingbourne, Kent.  hls0026

Kemsley, Sid: Cabinet Portrait by F M Ramell, 34 High Street, Sittingbourne, Kent.  Appears to have been taken around the same time as that of Harry Kemsley (hls0026)  hls0025
